WINTERHAVEN

Contact:  Mark Middlebusher

Each year the churches of Laurel open their doors to homeless people during the winter months. Two separate shelters are operated—one for men and one for women. For one week at a time the churches take turns offering a warm place to sleep, dinner, breakfast and a bag lunch.

How can you help?

It takes many volunteers to make these weeks of service successful. Some of the duties involved are:

  • Picking people up from Elizabeth House and bringing them to the church;
  • Volunteering to stay at the church for either the evening shift (7:00-10:00 p.m.) or for the night shift (10:00 p.m. – 7:00 a.m.) – two volunteers per shift;
  • Preparing a meal for those who don’t eat at Elizabeth House or baking something, or just bringing snacks;
  • Taking people to the shower once a week;
  • Taking a load or two of laundry home at the end of the week;
  • Transporting cots, blankets, etc., to the next church on Sunday morning.

This coming winter Our Savior will be housing the women for one week in January and for the men in Febuary. A sign-up sheet will be posted so you can sign up for the night of your choice or for one of the other jobs.

Please contact Mark Middlebusher to volunteer or to obtain information regarding the dates of the men’s or women’s shelter.
